Views to stand and admire but interiors to turnaround and leave behind! This has always been a room with a view but the interiors have never quite matched the beauty of the Cornish coastline. Over the last 3.5 years that we have owned Leat House, we have slowly peeled away the yellow from this room. Initially we had yellow papered walls, a wrought iron 4 poster bed with yellow checked drapes and cushions, yellow lampshades and yellow curtains!
In January 2018, we said goodbye to the yellow walls and the 4 poster bed and gave the room a little revamp. With a paintbrush at the ready, I headed to Cornwall with my Mum and Scarlett to take on the room transformation. Here is the blog post on our weekend room revamp (linked here).
This year, the house underwent a full renovation. As with any old property (this one is 200+ years old) we inevitably found some hidden ‘nasties’. One was the inclusion of asbestos throughout the house. Naturally, this all had to be removed which was a bit of a blow to the project (and budget!).
The silver lining was that all the old anaglypta wallpaper, which was on nearly every wall in the house (it was awful!), had to removed and the original beams in the upstair rooms could be revealed. The master bedroom has benefited as a result, with slightly higher ceilings and exposed beams.
How the room looked in 2017;
And here is it now…
How the design started
From the outset, I wanted this room to be uncomplicated in design with a contemporary feel, yet touched on the charm and character of this traditional Cornish home. There obviously had to be a ‘flavour’ of seaside decor within the room but that was limited to shell pendants, Cornish tree prints and a few accessories.
The most important aspect for me was to ensure the views could be admired and appreciated. By raising and widening the curtain pole, simplifying the balcony glass doors and removing the shutters, your eyes are now drawn to the outside sea views.
I opted for Wimborne White by Farrow & Ball on the walls. It’s a lovely soft, warm white which makes the space feel light and bright. I did think about adding patterned curtains to the room but decided against this as I was concerned they would detract the eye from the view. I’m glad I went with natural ones as the views remain the focus of this room.
Below is the mood board I pulled together for this room. Many of the items I already had such as the bed, side units, chest of drawers, pendants and mirror (all sourced for the weekend room revamp with my Mum).
I up-cycled our old blue chest of drawers using my Tom Howley kitchen paint which is colour matched to Hague Blue by Farrow & Ball and fitted some new antique brass drawer handles to it (linked further below).
I am yet to source a rug for this room as I think that will really finish off the space but I will be heading to London Persian Rug Company‘s warehouse very soon to see what I can find. 1) Tahlia Easy Fit Shade, £60, Next 2) LED Tiered Chandelier Light Fixture Modernism Shell Pendant Light Fixture, £165.06, Litfad 3) Ethel Beaded Chandelier, £99, Dunelm 4) KUTA – Pendant Light with Mother of Pearl and Golden Metal Drops, £165, Maisons Du Monde

A most beautiful transformation, carefully planned and instigated x
It’s absolutely beautiful and so inviting. The whole house is amazing. You have a talent for getting everything just right. There is a calmness to the whole house which is exactly what people want when they are having a break. It is perfect for summer or winter. We’ll done.
Beautiful! Love how the focus is all about that gorgeous view.
In your links, it says the curtains are ivory – they look grey, or is that just the light?
Could you also tell me the name and brand of your carpet, please?
🙂
Author
Thank you. Yes, they are the ivory ones but they do have a muted grey undertone. The carpet is Primo Ultra in the colour Cloudy Bay
It looks stunning. I love that you create a designer high end look using many mainstream brands. Truly inspirational x

It looks amazing SJ, everything that you do always does! I can’t believe the revamp you did with your mum was back in 2018, it didn’t seem that long ago.
The whole cottage looks stunning, well done xx

I know! But when you look at the pictures with Scarlett in you realise how long ago it was!
So beautiful, what a calm inspiring room. I love it SJ. How do you stay away, I’d want to move there permanently. Leathouse is on my bucket list now 🤞🏻
Beautiful room but you definitely have a talent for interior design. Beautiful house. Needing white bedlinen that doesn’t crease easily so can I ask which brand you use
Author
Thank you. We actually hire our linen as it’s a rental and is much easier to manage.
Beautiful! Would you mind telling me where the fur at the end of the bed is from and also the size please?
Thank you so much for sharing this with us – you are so talented and love everything you do xx
A really fabulous room & very inspiring.
Did you buy the blue chest of drawers or paint them yourself…? Is it an F&B colour?
Author
I painted them using my kitchen paint which is based on the colour Hague Blue by F&B
Absolutely stunning, you have a real talent for interiors, thank you for sharing – so much inspiration! 🌊💫
